Nightow Notes

I have been jotting down notes as I go along, and I figure I would consolidate them in one place.

Line Weights:
- This is probably Inking 101, but if I use a thicker marker on two sides of an object and a thinner marker on the other two, it gives the object a sense of depth.

Architecture:
- TWO THINGS: CRACKS AND RANDOM SPOTS. This is crazy-effective at getting the look of the buildings right. I took a 0.05 micron pen and drew in the cracks. It made me a little nervous at first to put dots all over my buildings, but after a while, it was like, "HEY! I NEED DOTS THERE!" and, "OH, THAT WOULD LOOK GOOD WITH DOTS!" [link]
- Most architectural drawings are in 1-point perspective. There is some 2-point, but it's all fairly simple. The thing about it, though, is that the drawings are so freaking intricate. Nightow makes jokes about being lazy and not drawing enough in his free-talk pages at the back of the TPBs, but a lot of work was put into each city drawing. And that's just the buildings. That's not the tons of people and objects and activities going on in those drawings.
- I have downloaded Sketchup, the 3D cad-like drawing program by Google, and I am experimenting with using models for guidelines to the city drawings. That way, the perspective is already done and the only things that need to be added are the cracks and pocks in the stucko/adobe walls so that the buildings look old.

Objects:
- You can also make OBJECTS look old by adhering to the crack and dot method. [link]

Proportion:
- Figures are generally drawn 9 heads tall, and the legs make up 5 of those heads. I think the hip area takes up 1 to 1.5 heads. Everything else is torso. Also, arms seem to be a little shorter than they would be on a normal 9-head-tall figure. They're the same length as the arms on an 8-head-tall figure. [link]
